Rusyn Proverbs

From Bonkalo’s “The Rusyns” 1940.

“Dismount a strange horse, even if you are in the middle of a puddle.”

“God is high above, the king far away.”

“Heavy is the loaded backpack, the empty one is even heavier.”

“The wife supports three walls of the household, the husband only one.”

“For the poor man it is difficult even to run down the hill, The rich man is able to go up running.”

“A man who has eaten enough does not believe the hungry man.”

“Don’t laugh at a funeral, don’t cry at a wedding.”

“When an old woman descends from a carriage, the wheel spokes have it easier.”

From Rusyn Easter Eggs From Eastern Slovakia

The sun shines on the good and evil alike.

The bee comes from a mans forehead, the wasp from the devils nose.

While I’m not complaining on Rusyn proverbs being posted, if you are aiming for a well-rounded Slavic Heathenry, why not add more proverbs from different areas?

Very few are actually Rusyn/Ruthenian. Seems like the less likely option. However, I love it because I found out a year or so ago my family is Ruthenian/Rusyn. So now I’ve been trying to learn everything I can – hence coming across your proverbs!

Cheers hun! Good luck with everything!!

I plan on adding more than just Rusyn proverbs but this is a work in progress and not of the highest priority. I happen to be of Rusyn descent so that was what I had on hand here first. I am glad to hear that you were able to take something away from this site…that is all I am after…now I just have to actually start working on this thing again:)

I completely understand the “actually start working on again” situation. It is the same for me and my blog. I’m on summer break now so hopefully I’ll be able to do more. I love all the Rusyn stuff you have, that is for sure! I’m still trying to learn everything possible.

Thank you again! I look forward to reading more!
